Day 7 - Ventura to Los Angeles - 60.4 miles - Soulcraft Bikes - Clif Bar - Fat Tire Beer - American Cyclery - Mike's Bikes Sausalito
The last stage of the ride was over in minutes (laugh). Riding 60.4 miles, it was a breeze. But, let's not speak of the route. .. . ..
Let's speak of how "so many individuals gathered to work together for one intention."
Let's speak of how "many people put off kindness like putting off a diet" ..yet, 1,618 cyclist and 400 crew didn't sit on their asses (this week). .....
It was the medics, the sponsors (who I've nickled and dimed), the family, Jane Elizabeth Evenson
Photography, Mike's Bikes - Sausalito, the cheerleaders, the bike techs, DJ "Fresh Freddy," the gear teams, the yoga teachers, the bike security, the motorcycle crew, "Tiger Honey Pot" - the band, the caterer, the logistics team, the safety team, The San Francisco AIDS Foundation, the DFL Cycling Team, Spill Kincaid - The Goat in the Tower, Brooke Thorton - Manicaretti - Italian Food Importer,The Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center, Jamie Mastin & Tad Natwick - Fat Tire Beer, Soulcraft, Adrea Stern - Satori Yoga Studio, Tyson - American Cyclery, Kyle, Jens, Norwegian Cruisliner - Tom, Woody, Tyson, Jim, Drew, Jason C., Jane, Helen, Housemate Rabiah, Shanghi Thunder, Sonya, Iyengar Yoga Teacher - Mary Friedland, Mr. Rio, Shiv, Woody, Cannondale, Powerhouse - San Francisco, my mother, your mother, Ginger, "The Angels," Lisa Hines - Bella Cucina Catering, Julie Ashby, Leslie Abraham - Clif Bar, Ciara, Mary Hogan, Black Rock - Ireland, In & Out Burger - Ventura, Donald, Carl's Jr. - Paso Robles, "The Unoffical Pitstop" - Mondecito, The Farm - Santa Cruz, Boudin Catering - San Francisco, Uncle Michael, and then some .....that made this whole thing happen.
And me, I'm in for the long haul. And, I'll be right back out there next year!
World History is a reflection of the actions, thoughts, and words of Human Beings ...
So as you go through your daily routine ..think of what is important ..and then ...DO IT!
And if you can't come up with something to do ....give me a call.

Two blocks from the finish, I was joined by my cycling mentor, CAT-2 Cyclist, Kyle. As we approached the finish line, Kyle and I cycled "arm & arm" (my hand on his shoulder/ his hand on my shoulder) to the finish. . .. .
And, as we crossed the finish line, I heard the sound of a Cow Bell. And, a loud cow bell it was ......And holding the cow bell was my number one fan!
Beating last year's record, my number one fan had arrived at the Wadsworth Theater Grounds at 8:00am. She unpacked her folding chair, read her book, had a little snack, ..and waited patiently .....
Each year, my number one fan:
1. Sponsors a one night stay at the Marriot Hotel.
2. Places a 6 pack of Fat Tire Beer & a vegetarian burrito in my hotel room.
3. Comes to the finish line.

Thank you Mrs. Eason!
And, to my surprise, as I stepped into my LAX Marriot Hotel room, I found a gift. Tad Natwick, Los Angeles Beer Ranger, New Belgium Brewing Co., dropped off a case of "Fat Tire beer." Fat Tire Beer Rocks! Support the beer that supports relieving the suffering of others ....
Wishing the best of all possible worlds,

Day 6 - Recaptured -Stats - Weather - Menu - Lompoc to "Oprah Winfrey " - Montecito - Ventura
By the cold morning of Day 6, one can be assured that one will complete "every mile of this journey."
The beginning of the route started with a low grade hill. (I love 'low grade'). Therefore, I charged up the hills like a bat out of hell. I rode a 45 mile non-stop to lunch. (However, that may not have been wise).
As I ate my lunch, I noticed . . I was "tired." So, I swallowed 2 clif shots, finished off my Cylo Max, and positioned myself in Setubandha Sarvangasana.
A short time later, I drank two bottles of water, thanked Boudin Catering for the wonderful lunch, and mounted my bike.
Soon after mile 54.2, I saw it! I saw one of the most beautiful things. I saw a sign that said "ice cream." I saw a sign that said "strawberries." I saw a sign that said "water." I HAD ARRIVED!
The Santa Barabara Unofficial PitStop in Montecito!
Besides being a beautiful stretch of the West Coastline, Santa Barbara/Montecito is the home of the "Santa Barbara Unofficial Pit-Stop."
Each Year, the locals of Santa Barbara gather and create their own "unofficial" pit stop for the AIDS Life Cycle Cyclist & Crew. There you can find: chocolate bars, strawberries, homemade ice cream, corndogs, twinkies, coco cola, and then some.. ...It's fabolous! ALL YOU CAN EAT! GRATIS!
Yet, has anyone seen Oprah Winfrey?
As I ate my strawberries and homemade ice cream, I asked several Montecito residents: "Where is Oprah Winfrey??"

Responses:
1. Oprah Winfrey is not here.
2. That's a funny question. . . . .
3. Can I be in the picture?
4. Great Idea!
5. Who's Oprah?
6. Oprah Winfrey can be found shopping in the local Montecito Vons.
As I left Montecito, I thought:
"Imagine ... How wonderful and empowering it would be .. . .. "
1. To have Harpo Productions produce a show about the fundraising organizations of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation:
* AIDS LifeCycle
* SSF AIDS WALK ,
* National AIDS Marathon
2. To have Oprah ride with and/or sponsor "a cycling team of diverse backgrounds in the fight against the AIDS Pandemic -Team "O".
3. To see 1,500 cyclists cycling down the Montecito / Santa Barbara Coast line wearing jerseys that say . . " Harpo Productions " . . . .
4. To have Oprah Winfrey speak about AIDS in America at the AIDS LifeCycle Closing Day Ceremonies in Los Angeles.
5. To invite Oprah Winfrey to participate in any way that she can . . ..
Similar to Tracy Chapman's involvement with AIDS Life Cycle #3 - 2004, the acknowledgement and presence of Oprah Winfrey in AIDS Life Cycle #5 - 2006 would provide indescribable benefits for the success of the AIDS Life Cycle Event, AIDS Awareness, AIDS Education, AIDS Services, and AIDS Research.
"Through the power of media, Oprah Winfrey has created an unparalleled connection with people around the world. As supervising producer and host of the top-rated, award-winning The Oprah Winfrey Show, Oprah Winfrey has entertained, enlightened and uplifted millions of viewers for the past two decades. Oprah Winfrey's accomplishments as a television pioneer, producer, publisher, educator and philanthropist have established Oprah Winfrey as one of the most respected and admired public figures today. "

It's five minutes that could change the world.
An Invitation to Harpo Productions & Oprah Winfrey
As I arrived in Ventura, I had to remember to take a "longer exhalation to calm the mind." Why?
It was time for my 8 ride tradition of:
1. Visiting Ventura's "IN & OUT Burger"
2. Planting my ass on the beach of Ventura.
2. Eatting 2 Cheeseburgers & 2 Fries and drinking a "FAT TIRE BEER!" (before my 4:00pm dinner.

However, (as the "bike tech bitch"), I had to accomidate the volunteer bike techs. Therefore, I went to In & Out Burger. I purchased 6 cheeseburgers and 2 fries. I delivered 4 cheeseburgers (gratis) to the four bike techs. And then, I went to the beach.
That evening, I sat at the beach with my cycling mentor, Kyle Rich and laughed about the past 6 days of the journey. And, I looked very forward to tomorrow and seeing my mother at the finish line.

As we returned to the campsite, I checked in with my bike techs. And one bike tech informed me that he didn't receive a "double double no onions." So, I proceeded back to IN & OUT Burger and purchased 3 Cheeseburgers and 1 Double Double NO Onions.
Later that evening, it was time for the Candle Light Vigil.

Day 5 - Recaputred - Stats - Santa Maria to River Park, Lompoc, CA.
Day 5 is the shortest riding day of the week. On Day 5, you notice how strong you have become. On the average, most riders are finished cycling the route by 9:30am. And several cyclist visit the city of Lompoc and Solvang to wash their laundry, go out for Thai Food, or even see a movie.
Traditionally, Day 5 is "Red dress day." So many cyclist put aside the spandex and cycle in various red dresses (guys & girls). I, myself, wore my "New Belgium Beer - Fat Tire Beer" Jersey.

I cycled the route at a very fast pace. My intentions were to get to camp and spend the remainder of the day relaxing in the sun (a siesta) chatting it up with fellow cyclist and crew.
At mile 16.7, I began a 1.6 mile hill climb. At mile 22.0, I began a l.5 mile hill climb. At that point, I ran into friend, ex roommate, Ciara Hogan.
Ciara, a 1st Year AIDS Life Cyclist, spoke the most beautiful words. As we rode together, she spoke of how no one could possibly imagine the AIDS Life Cycle experience unless they were participating. Also, she expressed how she was so glad that she was involved with the ride. And, she knew that "somehow" she would finish the route.
Looking at Xmas Past:
One year ago, upon my return from AIDS Life Cycle #3, Ciara told me that she would be joining me in AIDS Life Cycle #4.
Therefore: I schooled her in purchasing a bike. I suggested a training routine. And, I answered questions all along the way.
Yet, it was Mary Hogan (Ciara's Mother), the town of Dundalk, Ireland, and the vilage of Black Rock, Ireland, that raised the $2.500 (pledge minimum) and made Ciara's dream a reality.
Thank you "Black Rock!"

click here to send the Dundalk, Ireland's local newspaper a shout out about Mary Hogan.
And then came one of our many volunteer cheerleaders . . . . Like "The Angels," the "Mojo Man," "The Chicken Lady," and "Kermit," several people devote an entire week of their lives to cheering us on ....At every challenging spot, you would definitely find someone there to keep you smiling and awake.
As I rode past pitstop 2, I was greeted at the top of the hill (in Brandenburg Air Force Base) by Ginger.
This year, I stopped and spoke with Ginger. Ginger expressed that she is unable to do the ride ..yet, she'll definitely spend the entire year designing outfits to keep us smiling.
Annually, Ginger rents a van. And then, she packs the van with a queen size bed and various outfits for the journey (Imagine:Monroe, Streisand, Ginger from Gilligian's Island ). Yet, ginger hasn't missed a beat. And, Ginger is present om many of the AIDS Ride events. It just goes to show you that EVERYONE CAN DO SOMETHING TO HELP SUPPORT AIDS RESEARCH, AIDS FUNDING, AIDS TREATMENT, AID EDUCATION, AND AIDS SERVICES. THERE IS NO EXCUSE!
My hat is definitely off to Ginger. And, I admire: her courage, her compassion, and her attention to detail.

P.s.
Ginger: I would like to support your endeavors and buy you a Channel Lipstick .....so get in contact with me.
Love to Ginger, tony

Day 4 - Recaptured - Stats - Paso Robles to Preisker Park, Santa Maria, CA. - 98.7 miles
This Route is my least favorite route. I dread this day of the ride. Yet, it has the most wonderful view of the Califonia Coast Line.
At mile 16.5, you reach an altitude of approximately 1800 ft. and you have just cycled up the "Evil Twins" (a 1.8 mile hill climb). The crest of the Evil Twins is the official half way marker to Los Angeles.

From the Crest of the Evil Twins, you can see the California Coast Line. It's truely a wonderful site. Also, at that moment, you know that you will soonly arrive in Pismo Beach.
The approximate 9 mile downhill from the Evil Twins could easy reach 45 mph.
Annually, at mile 66, I stop and visit the local Buddhist Temple. I dismount my bike. I take off my shoes. I sit in Siddhasana. And then, I begin to resite the Gayatri Mantra.
Aum Bhur Bhuvah Swah Tat Savitur Varenyam
Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat
And then, I proceed to the finish.
It was a wonderful ride.
Some people were thinking of visiting the court trial of Michael Jackson (imagine that?).
Wishing the best of all possible worlds,
tony

Day 3 Recaptured - King City to Pasa Robles - Stats
Pasa Robles has many vinyards ...
Wine country = "HOT WEATHER!"
However, there are a few sights to be seen. Each year, as a ride through the Articoke Fields, I wonder: "when will I stop and take a picture?".
In one particular agricultural area there are cut out billboard human figures (approximately 30 ft tall) gardening in the articoke fields. It's like the "Land of the Giants."
On hot weather days, a bike tech would enjoy a Chocolate Milkshake.
Therefore, after my shower. I resumed my 10 year tradition ( 7 ride tradition) of being the "bike tech bitch." As the "bike tech bitch," I am obligated to see that the bike techs are "happy." Therefore, I ran over to Carl's Jr., picked up chocolate shakes, and delivered them to our volunteer Bike Techs (gratis).

Opening Ceremonies Video & A Movie Night
Day 1 - Recaptured - Stats - Weather - Menu
The night before Day 1, I asked Rabiah (my housemate) to wish me "tale winds" (at mile 40) of Day 1.

Annually, I travel to the Cow Palace with 4th Year, AIDS Life Cyclist, "Don Colnago." At 4:30am, Don Colnago and Toni (his friend)arrived at my house. I jumped in the Toyota Tundra-2002 and we travelled to opening ceremonies.
Don Colnago =
Personal Statistics:
Origin: Great Britian - Darfort Kent, England
Present Location: Reseda, CA 91335
Height: 5'1.5"
Occupation: Roofing Contractor
Road Bike Frame Model: Colnago C40 Carbon
Groupo: Campagnolo Record 10 Speed - 2 Ring - Compact Gearing
Age: 50
Favorite Pro Cyclist: Mario Tripalenia
Worst thing on the ride: Sprinklers
If Don Colnago had one thing to say to the world:
" . . .probably something like be courteous to your neighbor and everybody try to work together ..basically the same thing as the aids ride ..everyone gets together and helps each other ...that's what the world needs. . . . "
If Don Colnago had one thing to say to Oprah Winfrey:
" . .... get together with the aids foundation and try to promote it more . ..".

At approx. 11:00am Day 1, as I ate my lunch, I looked up at that next hill. At that point, I noticed that I would have a "tale wind" .. the wind at my back!
Quickly, I packed up my things ....Told Mr. Colnago goodbye .....And, I rode an approx. 33 mile "non-stop" to the finish line.
After arriving into camp. I met up with "the first rider of the day," Kyle Rich (not that anyone was counting).
As an endurance cyclist, it is important (within the first 2 hours after completion of your ride) to provide your body with proteins, carbohydrates, electrolytes, fat, and water. So, Kyle and I went to a nearby local cafe:
The Farm
Bakery, Cafe & Gifts
6790 Soquel Drive
Aptos, California, CA. 95003
Tel: 831-684-0266
Fax: 831-689-0241
farmbakery@sbcglobal.net
The Farm had the characteristics of a San Francisco cafe (ex. outdoor seating, great coffee drinks, a beautiful ham & cheese sandwich)...yet, it was a bit different (smile) .. .
I spoke with Andria, Chayne, Sancho, Laura, and Tyler. And, I was so completely flatter by their words of praise. They spoke fondly of the AIDS Life Cycle Event and supported the efforts and courage of the 1,618 cyclist & 400 crew members. A few even expressed an interest in participating in AIDS Life Cycle #5 - 2006. ....

(It was nice to see the younger generation's support).
click here to send "The Farm" a shout out and a thanks for their support
Anyone who supports the AIDS Life Cycle Event gets the "Tony Eason's thumbs up." I encourage you to stop in Aptos, CA. and visit "The Farm." And tell the gang, I'll be back to see them in 2006. And . . . .the pics are on the way!

Day Eight- The 575 miles are over - back in the San Francisco Mission District
After dining (with my number one fan) at the LAX Marriot Hotel on vegetarian burritos & Fat Tire Beer, . ... and an 8 hour car ride down the 101 freeway (with Jens Meiers), I have returned home to the San Francisco, Mission District.
Thank GOD!
And as I sit here drinking an untraditional "hard alcohol" cocktail(Marker's Mark, tonic, and lime juice), I can offically say ...my training in over. So ...let the party begin.
Another year completed.
Tomorrrow, I will begin to piece together and share with you all the wonderful details that occurred on my journey to Los Angeles. Stay tuned.
Love to you all,
Wishing the best of all possible worlds,
tony

Ventura - Day Six - Last night at the Ritz
So today, I travelled from Lompoc to Ventura. I rode the first 40 miles "non stop." And then, I was at the lunch stop. The sandwich saved my life. However, at mile 55, Hello Oprah Winfrey,
I applaud your personal achievements and your philanthropic efforts. Please consider assisting Iyengar yoga teacher, tony eason with his efforts to provide AIDS Awareness, AIDS Services, AIDS Education, and AIDS Treatments to those who need them . ... ..

Iyengar Yoga teacher, Tony Eason would like to invite the acknowledgement, support, and presence of Oprah Winfrey & Harpo Productions in AIDS LifeCycle.
Similar to Tracy Chapman's involvement and Logo TV's involvement, the acknowledgement and presence of Oprah Winfrey in AIDS LifeCycle will provide indescribable benefits for the success of the event, the services of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, and AIDS Awareness Worldwide.
P.s. Thanks for "stepping up to the plate" and assisting the people of New Orleans (you ROCK!)
Okay, I'm out of time ...I'll be home on Sunday. I write all the details by Thursday.
Love to you all,
tony

Lompoc - Day Five - Typing at Gear Truck A #224
Okay .....so the audio blog seems to be offline ....yet, Jackson (thanks to Rabiah) is working on a solution ..perhaps, I can speak to you for closing ceremonies. For now, I'll just sit on the back of this 24' Ryer truck that carries 7 tons of luggage (approximately 200 bags, 100 tents, and three crew members) from camp site to camp site. Lucky ....they also have a laptop.

Anyhow ...
It's Day Five.
I arrived in Lompoc about 3 hours ago and I'm dying to eat ANYTHING (If you can Fed Ex a Mission District Burrito to Ventura ..do it!).
Kyle hasn't been seen all day. However, I'm sure that Kyle came in "in the top 2."
Shiv is gleeming as ever. . ....Her ankle has somewhat healed, her bike is still in one piece, she finished off the day. And we spent some time talking in nature.

Saw Ciara this morning. She's definitely "alive and kicking". Ciara, a first time AIDS Life Cycle Cyclist, has done a very impressive job. When I spoke with her this morning she stated that "no one can imagine this experience. One would have to experience it to understand."

Last year, upon my return from AIDS Life Cycle #3, Ciara told me that "next year, I'm going!" It's a fucking pleasure to see her "perform."
Jens (my tentmate) and I had our first "argument on the ride" (last night). It amazes me that we've put up with each other so long. However, now we have a bigger challenge .. . it's called "TOMORROW!"
Spending 7 days in a tent with a fellow cyclist, cycling in warm temperatures, climbing every mountain, stopping to fix other's flats, having a latte (only once), seeing old and new faces, hearing others' stories, and checking out the boys (smile) ...I'm having a great time!
Yet! Has anyone seen Oprah?
Tomorrow, I will be cycling through the city of Santa Barabara. As I cycle, I will chant, I will think of Oprah Winfrey, and I will wonder ...."where is she?"
I will arrive in Santa Barabara at about 10:00am. (That give Oprah plenty of time to warm up "the jet"). So do me a favor ...go to my newsletter and follow the instructions .. . .World History is a reflection of Human Behavior ....help me speak with Oprah ....
Camp Life - Catering.
"The food ain't AIDS Life Cycle Sponsor,
Caterer - Lisa Ruggieri Hines
Traditionally, during meal times, I choose the vegetarian menu option. However, due to lack of protein in the vegetarian option, I have chosen the "meat option"
Entertainment?
NO need for it .. I'm usually in bed by 8:00pm. .. Up at 4:30am. I'll tell you the exact details when I return (smile).
Out of time .. Now, go write to Oprah Winfrey and tell her to warm up the jet!

Day Three - AIDS Life Cycle - Pasa Robles
Life in the fast lane of Tony Eason has been simply fantastic. I'm so glad to be in Pasa Robles.
So what's up with the audio blog?
Answer: "I have no idea."
Over the last two days, I have called that damn audio blog number over 10 times and every time ...It's sends me a busy signal. If anyone can figure out what the hell is going on with that number .....call me and let me know (seriously).
However, today a very nice man of the crew truck "A," Bob Frueh, allowed me to use his laptop. So let's get started.

Day One
Opening ceremonies was fantastic. There I was excited (and freezing my ass off) im my lovely Fat Tire Gear. Thank You Fat Tire Beer Meister - Jamie Mastin for your "beer bust" sponsorship & gear sponsorship.
Special thanks to
Fat Tire Beer
My riding buddy - Chick, met Ciara, Tom, Mr. Rio, Jens, Shiv, Kyle, and myself at the starting line. Chick then rode with us to Santa Cruz.

Kyle Rich was the first rider into camp. I came in about number 50. It was a great day.

Day Two
Day Two is when the excitement and fantasy ends ... . and the real ride begins.
At 2:00am, our tents became wet ..but it wasn't the rain . .it was the sprinkling system. Woody spent the night in a wet tent, with a wet sleeping bag, and wet clothing.

At 4:30am, we all began to pack for our 6:30am departure. My outfit of the day? Baby Blue Soulcraft Kit! Eyes were rolling when I arrived at the starting line with my fine ass Soulcraft Gear ...thanks soulcraft!

Special thanks to Sean
Walling, Matt Nyiri and the
Soulcraft
Shiv crashed at mile 9 (yet she was okay). Ciara came in at 4:00pm. Yet, Ciara enjoyed every mile. Two fellow riders crashed and had to be removed (yet no one died). Kyle Rich came in as "Number 1." I came in around number 40.
Special thanks to
Satori Yoga Studio

As I ate my dinner, I listened to the stories.
It's amazes me that:

Tom: He's $4000.00 behind in his rent. And most likely, tom will be evicted when he returns from this journey.

Ciara: Is broke yet very happy to be here.

Tony: I've been broke for years. Yet, I know that I'm doing the right thing.

Shiv: Lost her sun glasses on Day Zero and can't afford to purchase a new pair. . . .. Seeks more employment when she returns to San Francisco. Fell of her bike on Day One. The wheel fell off her bike on Day Two. ..,..yet, she gleeming with laughter and happiness. Check out Shiv's blog
So why is it that all these "poor" people have the time to contribute to charity? Because, it's the right thing to do! So as you go through your day, think of what's "really" important ......and go do it!
Oops! My computer time is up ...yet, this very nice volunteer has said that I can write more tomorrow .....thanks for all your support ...tony

Early Morning - Day One - A tribute to Edna Flores
Good morning everyone! It's 05 June 2005, 3:40am. And, I'm about to jump in the shower and take my ass on a journey of a lifetime.
But before I go, I must acknowledge an AIDS Life Cycle training ride leader, a fellow cyclist, a Yoga student, a law student, and friend, Edna Flores.

Yesterday, as I spoke with Edna, she informed me that because of personal challenges (out of her control), she had to drop out of this year's line up for AIDS Life Cycle #4.
Well Edna, I've admired your commitment to AIDS Life Cycle. And, I want you to know that I (and several others) will be thinking of you "every step of the way."
Check out Edna's blog at: http://pnaypugmutt415.blogspot.com/2004_12_01_pnaypugmutt415_archive.html
Much love to you Edna ...and see you on the road ...love, tony

Day Zero - The day of registration - 04 June 2005 - "All systems are a go!"
Today, 04 June 2005, the day of regisration is traditionally termed "Day Zero." This morning, at 9:30am,I arrived at registration to meet up with my cycling buddies, meet old friends, and participate in the "tent assignment," "medical waiver release," and "safety video."
As I arrived to registration, I was greeted by my (father's brother) Uncle Michael. Michael Stokes, my uncle, was one of over 400 volunteer crew members who were present.

Tomorrow, at 4:30am. I will begin my journey with the support and laughter of fellow AIDS Life Cyclist: Kyle Rich, Woody Repulles, "Norwegian Cruiseliner" Tom, Jens Meiers, "Don Colnago" - Barry Elliot, "Girl A" - Sonya, Shivie Cook, "Mr. Rio," and motorcycle crew member (and past California AIDS Ride cyclist) Jim Berquist.
Now, I'll crack open a Fat Tire Beer. Eat some PASTA! And, I'll begin to ponder on the where abouts of Oprah Winfrey
(smile).
Stay tuned for the 5:30am, 05 June 2005, broadcast of AIDS Life Cycle Opening Ceremonies - 2005.
See Ya on the road.

On 05 June 2005, I will depart from San Francisco with fellow cyclist and 400 crew members in the AIDS Life Cycle #4 Event. So, if you've never seen a stream of 1,500 cyclist coasting down the streets ...come out and cheer us on.
